The National Provider Identifier of the healthcare provider who ordered a diagnostic test, laboratory service, durable medical equipment, home health service, or prescription medication for a patient. CMS requires ordering provider NPI on Medicare claims for laboratory, imaging, DME, and home health services to establish medical necessity accountability and support program integrity audits. The ordering provider is responsible for the medical necessity determination underlying the ordered service and may be subject to audit if ordering patterns suggest inappropriate utilization.
