ISO-11179 Definition
The Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System enrollment status indicating whether a healthcare provider or supplier has completed Medicare enrollment and is authorized to bill Medicare for covered services. PECOS enrollment is required for all providers and suppliers submitting claims to Medicare, and providers must revalidate their enrollment every 3-5 years. PECOS data is used in fraud prevention, claims adjudication, and provider directory maintenance.
