Definition

ISO-11179 Definition

The maximum dollar amount a health plan will pay for a specific covered service based on the lesser of the provider contracted rate, the health plan fee schedule, or the billed charge, used as the basis for calculating member cost-sharing obligations including deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. Allowed amounts represent the plan negotiated reimbursement level and are distinct from billed charges which reflect the provider chargemaster rates. The difference between billed charges and allowed amounts is the contractual adjustment written off by the provider.

Why This Term Matters

Healthcare data terminology is foundational for any data engineer working in this industry. Precise understanding of standard terms enables accurate schema design, reduces downstream data quality issues, and ensures pipelines meet the regulatory and interoperability requirements imposed by HIPAA, HL7 FHIR, and CMS reporting frameworks. Without this foundation, even technically well-built pipelines produce data that fails validation when it reaches payers or regulators.
