A laboratory measurement of the total number of white blood cells per unit volume of blood, expressed as 10^3/uL, used to assess immune system function, detect infection, inflammation, and hematologic malignancies. WBC count is a component of the Complete Blood Count and is used with the differential to characterize leukocytosis or leukopenia. Critical low values indicate severe immunosuppression risk.
